More than 50 flights of US Shuttles and Russian “Soyuz” and “Progress” Space Ships were needed to assemble the ISS over a 5 year period.

The ISS project represents an engineering, scientific and technological breakthrough in human space exploration. The ISS includes 6 laboratories, provides more work space, and better living conditions for R&D works than any space craft ever built.

Characteristics of the Station:

- General Mass: about 419 tons.
- Operational Orbit Altitude (H min - max) 370 – 460 km.
- Internal Volume – about 1,200 m3 equal to passenger cabin of 747 jumbo jet.
- Truss Length – 108.4 m.
- Total Modules Length – 74 m.
- Crew Members – 6 persons
